Lemons Off Kilter Style

Stylized Lemons: Off Kilter Style

Yesterday I applied the Lemon Splash Grid style to add to the mini-collection from Wednesday WrapUp Lemons. Today, I use another favorite style: Off Kilter Outlines.

This is a fun style because of the different styles within it: outline, no outline, off kilter, and off kilter with swirls. I created all four styles, as shown in the above gallery.

Technique

Start with an outline of the basic elements. Small items like the ladybug are outlined on a separate layer because they are messy if placed off kilter.

Use the outlines as a reference layer to fill in colors using a new layer for each color.

Add texture/shadow/highlights in a style you like. Here I applied Lisa Bardot’s Quick Scribble Sprinkle Brush from her Pencil Box set for shadows. I also created texture on the leaves with her Haphazard Hatches and on the lemons with Hand Drawn Dots from her Imperfect Patterns set.

Add any details like the leaf veins on a separate layer.

Choose background and texture. Here I applied a Jennifer Nichols repeat pattern texture on screen blend mode to the teal background.

Add signature and any text.

For styles:

  • For outline: save illustration with outline in place in view
  • For no outline, save illustration with outline layer hidden
  • For off kilter style, duplicate the outline, hide one, and move the visible outline just a bit off the element to fit your taste.
  • For off kilter style with swirls, add a new layer and create extra lines and swirls to highlight aspects of your illustration

Enjoy! This is one of my favorite styles because of the possibilities. You could even make the outline a neon or rainbow style by alpha locking or clipping a layer to add the dynamic coloring, like these. I applied the Luminescence Light Pen in the dark teal— it displays in neon teal and white light.

Just think of the variety of moods that could be created!
