Cherry popsicle on bursting vintage sun

July Doodle Popsicle

Jennifer Nichols of @leila_and_po studio provides weekly art prompts on her Instagram. This week is “popsicle,” and last week was “sandals.”

For the popsicle illustration, I used Jennifer’s Gouache brush set and her Vintage set.[the sunburst]. It was great practice for creating a painterly popsicle, with different colors on one layer to indicate the way light and shadow dances on objects, creating light and dark areas. I’m not happy with the highlights in white, but they work.

Sandals on a towel on the beach

I made this a while ago— before the prompt week since our Creative Journey community by Jennifer gets early notice of the prompts. I tried to create sand with a towel that follows the uneven surface of the sand. I created the wet portion of the sand from the waves and the waves with the bubbles at the edge of the wave which dance along the shore. On top of the towel are my favorite shoes, Birkenstock, for which my own shoes were models. I tried to make them look like they were on the towel, just kicked off as the person ran into the sea for a swim, shown by the darker sand made into footprints. I do not remember which brushes I used. They would have been smooth brushes to fill easily, a sketch brush, and a texture brush.

Jennifer Nichols is an artist teacher with a desire to share and guide others in learning art with Procreate. I’ve been taking her classes and sharing in her FB group, and now she has her own community with a membership plan that will fit any novice or professional artists needs. Take a look:
