Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. Tomorrow is my mom’s birthday. She would have been 106. She passed away at 73, due to smoking. So, I’ve been miss her for over thirty years already. This picture was when my mom was about 23 years old before any of my siblings or myself were even considered. Looks like they were picking up my Aunt Millie from the train station. Both women dressed in the styles of the 1940s after WWII. Life was good. No more war.

I did not know this side of my mom— except when her girlfriends came around for coffee. Then, I could sense in the laughter and chatter that “the girls” had stories to remember while my brother and my friends dashed in for Kool-aid and were promptly shuffled outside again so they could continue their serious chinwag.

I remember in the 70s with platform shoes and shoulder pads, my mom would laugh and say, “You look like I did in the 40s.”

So, to my mom, in style.

40s stylin’
Hair back curled
ribboned hat on top
Shoulders puffed
or padded
Simple chic
Heels low,
Pump style;
Jeepers,
A swell bird,
A real dish,
My mom
