The Skies Above Bedding Design Challenge from Spoonflower asks artists to design for bedding with the theme of what they see above them in the skies. I chose the night sky viewed through the forest canopy with the stars and Milky Way in the far distance. Voting starts July 27-August 1.
It took quite a few versions to get a scene that I liked. I tried to put the moon in, but it didn’t look like the moon when repeated. I tried it with the drop style but it still just looked like circles. The texture I chose made it look like the moon, but I could not figure out how to get the moon further apart. I think I’d need a larger canvas with parts without the moon. I tried a smaller version of that, but it didn’t work because of the texture not lining up.
So, I stuck with leaves and stars. I wanted the look to be like looking up at the stars through the canopy, so I had to mask and rearrange some leaves to keep the look of a canopy, and not just leaves floating in the air. I’m actually excited to get my swatches because I’m thinking our new room could use this design as curtains on the French door.’
