Vectorizing

vectorized periwinkle and leaves

July Doodle Periwinkle and Leaves

I joined Liz Kohler Brown’s The Studio to learn Affinity Designer for surface design. It’s a vector app that’s very powerful, and I’ve used it before.

Sometimes Procreate art just looses its quality and I get frustrated not being able to increase or decrease the size of a motif in that application. Too much copy/paste also decreases the quality.

So I want to learn Affinity. It’s not hard to learn, but I do need tips and help planning my designs. I’ve taken Liz’s classes on Skillshare, so I know she knows what she’s teaching.

This periwinkle was drawn as a line drawing in Procreate– the one thing Procreate is good at is stabelizing my shaky hands so the lines are smooth. Liz taught us to export the Procreate jpg line art and import it into Adobe Capture to vectorize it as an svg which exports to Affinity and lets me finish the coloring there.

From here I can make a pattern than is scalable because it’s a vector and not a pixel based illustration. I like that.

The whole process is quite easy, and I’m looking forward to the ton of other classes with Affinity that Liz has in her “Studio” library for members.
