Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. A couple weekends ago we stayed in Bothell, Wa in a hotel in the commercial part of the city, which we chose for it’s design that included a woods around it. We were able to walk along a path around a wetlands area, meeting many others with the same inclination: to enjoy a bit of nature in our day.

Kudos to the city planners who created the paths and didn’t simply pave over the wetland area. In the town south of us, most people don’t know that a small creek runs beneath the parking lots of the city. It’s dry most of the year, but in the spring it flows and falls into Crescent Bay.

I prefer this little path in Bothell, along the creek where geese swim and salmon still return to spawn. One of the ways to help slow global warming are to establish more urban forestry areas. But it’s not just needed in urban areas, but also in our small towns. And how nice would it be to have small parks in each neighborhood?

Our great-grandson’s birthday party was in such a neighborhood park in Snohomish, WA. It was just a corner lot with playground equipment, picnic tables, and trees. Another Washington city whose planners keep nature and the health of our world in mind.

Poetry

Urban Wetlands

In the middle of a city
In the expanding urban world
Thank those who plan for wildlife
For habitats and paths
For walking in the city
With nature as a friend.
