Daily Note
Every day, a photograph, a poem.
I write each November — a poem a day plus writing 1667 words every day for NaNoWriMo. [for more information see my post: I Write]. Today is the twelvth day and I’ve met or surpassed my target goals each day. I’ve written 21,968 words so far of the 50,000 to write by November 30th. Hooray. The novel is about the balance of light and dark.
The dark can be lit, as Olivia discovered as she helps her father:
Olivia picked up the sycamore leaf, which turned a bright, golden yellow as the fireplace flickered higher and the room lightened as if the sun shone through the windows. She glanced at the windows, and though the edges of the sill seemed lit in a stream of gold, the outside still looked bleak.
But inside, the paneled walls of oak warmed to a soothing golden brown. “It’s beautiful here.” Olivia thought. She noticed the carpet softened to a soft green, like the wood sorrel leaves that covered much of the meadow. “I’ve never seen this room look like this— like a meadow. The ceiling was painted as if looking through a canopy of oak leaves and vines of blue morning glories and stems of lavender reaching towards the blue green sky.
Oberon adjusted his shoulders, and Olivia said to him, “We’ve barley soup and such ready.” She filled a bowl with soup and sat on the hearth next to Oberon’s chair, prepared to spoon the soup to him.
“Papa?” She couldn’t remember the last time she’d called her father that. She shivered a bit though she was toasty warm from the fire. She listened for word from her mother in her mind, but found nothing. “Papa?”
