Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. Another cat photo and poem. Today is Scott’s birthday. He received many messages on social media and in our family chat, including a lovely conversation with our granddaughter and her little family.

He enjoyed a long and productive walk with our new dog, Guthrie, a one year old golden doodle with a gentle personality. We don’t know what Guthrie’s parentage is or how he lived before, though he was neglected. He’s very skiddish, so we’ll need to gain his trust. He loves Scott, and Scott is so happy for him, his early birthday present.

Our cat is not happy, but luckily, Guthrie just ignores her. The cat is much nicer though, more willing to accept our pets. She, too, was rescued and has not been the cuddly purring friendly kitty we had hoped for. She mostly wants us to feed her and leave her alone, batting at us with one open claw if we try to pet her. In the morning and evening, she needs a long purr on Scott’s chest, but then her tail flicks, she runs off in huff and hiss. A strange cat. But, with the new dog, she actually lets us reach down and pet her most of the time.

So today, when Scott opened his presents and tossed the shopping bag on the floor, we were surprised that, within ten seconds, the cat, without regard for a possible dog passing by, slinked into the paper bag, peeking back out at us. Cats are curious creature who simply cannot resist the temptation of a box or bag. She spent about five minutes sniffing around and then slinked back out, away from us and up into her cat tree, always a safe place for her.

It’s been a great day for all of us.

But, the cat gets the poem today.
