Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. Yesterday’s walk with Guthrie included several pauses at the breaks in the sagebrush on the old road behind city hall. And at one point, I enjoyed seeing the immensity of our sycamore, the tree in our backyard that dwarfs the houses in our neighborhood and that, in late November, still holds onto its huge yellow, lobed autumn leaves, though many already cover the back yard in a carpet of crunchy golds, shining in the autumn sunlight.

These leaves on the tree will hang on until well after the first snow fall, meaning raking them is almost impossible; they’ll hold until spring.

And these leaves on the lawn will provide days of running through them, enjoying their splash of color and crisp greeting of “Hello! We’re still here…Enjoy!”

Some people do not like what they call a “mess,” but I, like Leo Buscaglia love the trees and the leaves and the earth and its creatures, living together. Together. I will run through them until someone else rakes them up. And I will remember that life is too short not to enjoy the gifts in the world. We live together, these leaves, the tree, and me and you: complementing one another’s flow of life, if we’re willing to make that choice, a choice that gives back to the world and makes it better.

And so, a poem.

Poetry

I, Sycamore

I hold on as should you
to the colors of life
thankful for the beauty
thankful for the life flow
I am and you are;
we the creatures of earth
with a choice to sustain one another—
I hold on to the colors of life
thankful I complement you,
fellow creature of earth.

Art by Sheri Edwards:

Autumn Leaves Wall Hanging and Tea Towel.

Not a wrap up, but rather a reminder that inspiration for art is all around us. Look out your window: What inspires you?

The large green leaves in this art piece are based on my lovely sycamore. The others are cottonwood, willow, and maple: all trees in our neighborhood.
