winter day at Crescent Bay
A Bit of My Day, Poetry, The Daily

A Quick Poem

Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. It’s late. I almost forgot to write a poem today. Again we walked at Crescent Bay on Lake Roosevelt. Guthrie enjoyed checking his messages, curious as to who’s been where.

The water fluctuates because the lake is a reservoir behind Grand Coulee Dam, and it fluctuates with the needs for irrigation, flood control, and electricity.

From the bluff that Guthrie and I stood upon above the bay, I could not see what I call “Ben’s Rock.” I call it that because this spot was part of a geology field trip I took my middle school students on long ago. Of course, one of the rules was, “Stay out of the water.” Ben, of course, stayed out of the water, but jumped over the water to that rock. So, it’s named after him, the “I’ll find the line” kid, as middle school students do!

The water was too high. I found a different rock I didn’t remember, and think it fell out of the small cliff at the spot. I walked along the edge, looking for the basalt Ben’s Rock, but in the winter light, at 4:00 PM, I could not see into the water, and I could not see the rock. I did find, however, the yarrow, blooming in December, another sign of climate change.

Since’s it’s late, I’ll just say that Guthrie and I are both curious. And, the poem…

A Quick Poem

Water is blue
The sky is too
Dogs are curious
And I am too.
