Welcome!
On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate. This Wednesday Wrap Up shares my process for a fun take on autumn leaves, based on a class from Jennifer Nichols of Leila and Po Studio in her Creative Journey Community of which I am a member and affiliate. Take a look at other posts from Jennifer’s lessons here: #ipadartwithjennifernichols. If you decide to join, if you click “join here” I’ll receive a bit as an affiliate.
The Class
The class was a “live draw” in two parts. We learned about drawing leaves and autumn things, creating “doodles” inside them, and adding color. I love drawing for fun in an “off-kilter style.” See here and here for examples. So that’s the process I used for my creations.
The Gallery Above
In my trials for how I wanted to create a pattern, I tried six different styles. In the top row you see the motifs are filled in three ways: solid, two-color, multi-color. In the second row, I turned each of those into an “off-kilter”style by moving the outline a little down and to the right [or the color layers up and to the left]. I liked the third one in the second row so I adapted it, by adding another layer behind of the main color, so the result is a two-color off kilter style.
The Pattern

To create the basic full drop pattern, I created a seed pod motif and an acorn motif to add to the design. I also created some single leafs in a small size and a small leaflet motif. The pattern is bright and energetic. I may make it into a dress next fall.
Try It
Have you tried an off-kilter style? Do you draw doodles within your doodles? Be sure to share on IG. Be sure to tag @42Sheri. It’s fun and relaxing to create the motifs and the pattern.
I’m so thankful to belong to the Creative Journey Community. Jennifer Nichols has so much to share about Procreate: lessons, styles of painting [pastels, watercolor, oils, chalk], free brushes and textures, and much more. In addition, the community is friendly and supportive, with many people joining in conversations and our zoom Question/Answer sessions. It’s wonderful to share with other artists and learn together.

And you’re welcome to follow this blog for art inspiration. We can share with #warmup4art to enjoy our work together! I look forward to your sharing and find me at @42Sheri, on Mastodon Sheri42, on Flickr teach.eagle Sheri 42.
