Wednesday WrapUp Bears and Sweets

Welcome!

On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate. This Wednesday Wrap Up shares two different styles that are fun and easy for lazy days that get the inspiration going again.

The Bear

The bear is for a prompt by Jennifer Nichols of Leila and Po Studio [Prompts at IG]: Cozy Bear in a Scarf.

I wanted something I could create with a brush set that allows easy fill land textures. I choose the Nitty Gritty Brush Set by Lisa Glanz. I love the smooth flow of the brushes and notice the shaders developed for just shading or highlighting as well as the textures. They make it easy to darken and lighten for lighting effects. The set also includes pattern textures which I used for the blue suit.

To get started with the bear, I used the template brushes in Easy Peasy Animal Kit by Lisa Glanz and adjust the stamps into a sketch for my vision of the bear, turning the bear slightly to the left.

Both brush sets come with tutorials, and they have provided the practice for me to apply here on my own.

The Macarons

Lisa Bardot hosts an art community, Artmakers Club, that includes tons of lessons in her bright and cheerful style. She also makes her own wonderful brushes and papers at BardotBrush. She also offers free lessons on her YouTube channel. She often provides a free set of brushes with her channel and does for the AMC.

Each month now she sponsors her #makingarteveryday challenges, which are available to everyone. One of those prompts this month is “macarons.” I decided to try that prompt today.

I also decided to do watercolor again with her Wonder Watercolor brushes, which come with an eighty page user guide with tutorials to learn to use the brushes. The background are from her Imperfect Patterns brush set.

The watercolors flow so easily — use only one stroke to fill in or layer. There are three parts: watercolor style [blooms, washes, wet, dry], glazes [darken, edge, texture], and tools [lighten, blend, add details]. I applied brushes from each of the three parts to create the macarons, based on directions by Sam Aker, mentor in the Artmaker Club community.

The background is from Lisa’s Imperfect Pattern brushes. I select a rectangle area and then brush in the pattern / color into the selected space.
