Where the Wildlife Begins

shrub-steppe at the edge of Grand Coulee

Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. Guthrie and I walked on one of the two sunny days this month up the top of a hill next to Crescent Bay Lake and below the edge of the town of Grand Coulee. I love the look of the row of houses on the cliff / hill across the way looking down on the view of the shrub-steppe where the wildlife begins. It is beautiful, wet with winter, and waiting for spring. I had to snap the photo and write the poem to capture the wild below the town.

Poetry

Where the Wildlife Begins

The rough of the rocks
The tough of the soil
random sprouts of grasses
evergreen clumps of sage
red stems of saskatoon berries
a view from the outskirts of town
from a row of houses built on the cliffs
where the wildlife begins.
