The Challenge
I’m starting this week’s prompt Local Flora for Shannon Mcnab’s 3×3 Sketch-Design-Repeat Challenge
My Choice
I’ve thought about the mallow, lupine, wood sorrel that grow well here. But the most important flower in this area is the arrowleaf balsamroot of the Astor family. That’s what I’m focusing on because of its deep cultural significance to the Native Americans here.
I have a ton of resources I’ve searched and saved in OneTab:

I have my own photos to review in an album of several local types of sunflowers, and mostly arrowleaf balsamroot. In my Flickr Photo album of my hike at Crescent Bay, I’ve several photos of the plant.
And, in a search for “sunflower” in my Flickr account, I’ve several photos, art pieces, and poetry for the lovely arrowleaf balsamroot.
And, as a reminder, this is why I love Flickr — I have albums, tags, and searches to find and organize my work– and share! Something that Instagram thing lacks.
What’s the Plan?
The plan is to review my research and create a hero illustration of a vintage biology poster with the plant and its parts as well as some Native American uses of the plant. From there I’ll create a pattern and coordinates. This is one of my favorite flowers, so I’m very excited to draw and paint yet more illustrations of the arrowleaf balsamroot.
