Wednesday WrapUp 3×3

Local Flora Challenge A more complete sketch of the sunflower I know, arrowleaf balsamroot for the prompt Local Flora for Shannon Mcnab’s 3×3 Sketch-Design-Repeat Challenge.

Welcome!

On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate. This Wednesday Wrap Up shares a review of the first and second week of  Shannon Mcnab’s 3×3 Sketch-Design-Repeat Challenge.

My Process

For each of the three weekly prompts, I research and bookmark resources to help me decide on a palette, style, and possible motifs for the challenge. I’m extending the challenge for myself to create the hero and secondary/blenders to accompany it. So I’m always thinking about the main and coordinating patterns. I wrote about this in my daily and earlier WrapUp.

When I finally decide on the style and palette, I choose a brush set in Procreate to fit the plan and begin the sketching, coloring, shading, highlighting, texturizing, etc. various motifs. Once I have the motifs, I create the hero illustration that tells the story for which the pattern and coordinating patterns will fulfill.

One of the plan’s possible illustration is a scientific poster for this week’s theme, Local Flora. I’ve chosen the sunflower, arrowleaf balsamroot that grows in our area as large, bright yellow sunflowers from May to July. I have plenty of my own photos and did the research to discover its special aspects, including the sunflower bee that lives exclusively off the asteraceae sunflowers.

With that information, I created my hero illustration for this week’s prompt. I chose Lisa Glanz’s AquaReal2 watercolor for the coloring and Lisa Bardot’s rough day liner from her Texturrific brush set for the outline and details.

I also made a few patterns from the motifs in the poster, but I have revisions to do yet on those for tomorrow.
