The Challenge

I’ve finished the collection for this week’s prompt  Cozy Christmas for Shannon Mcnab’s 3×3 Sketch-Design-Repeat Challenge. This is the last of the prompts for this version of the challenge. We only had to post one design, but I am adding to each to create a collection: hero, secondary, blenders. You might want to sign up for Shannon’s Portfolio Masterclass to learn how to build your portfolio for licensing. Shannon has expertise and powerful lessons to get you started.

My Plan

I finished my plan: a hero, pattern, secondary pattern, and blender around the idea of birds cozied up in ear muffs, scarves, and stocking hats. I sprinkled in some holly and made that my secondary pattern. Then I took my background and added funky, wavy, texture-stripes for the blender. The main pattern are the five cozy birds and some holly.

As I noted yesterday [ post ], I revised the entire collection using brushes without a limitation of commercial use. I used Calvin the Drifter of Drifter Studio watercolor brushes, which you can purchase here. They are fantastic you use, like real watercolor, and his tutorials demonstrate how to use the main brushes for watercolor illustrations.

Take a look at Calvin’s YouTube channel to enjoy some amazing tutorials using his brushes.

I also redid the pattern so it was less crowded with more holly:

As you can see, the palette is pretty limited, adapting one from Shannon for the challenge. The brushes are from Calvin the Drifter, Procreate, Lisa Bardot, and Jennifer Nichols– oh, and two of my own.

Notes

Please note that all of the brushes and canvas used [Lisa Bardot, Jennifer Nichols, and Calvin the Drifter] include a license that is for personal and commercial use, with no restrictions except the obvious — like not reselling or adapting, to protect their work.

I enjoyed drawing these little birds, creating the wings and tails in different ways, adding the cozy apparel, and arranging them into a pattern.

Jennifer Nichols classes, canvases, and brushes come as part of her Creative Journey Community where participants support and share with one another to help all of us improve and discover our own styles and processes. She shares many brushes with no restrictions [except not to share]. The “snowflake” texture is from one of her sets of repeat canvases. Much appreciated. I’m an affiliate for her platform, so click here to learn more and join us in her community where her classes are located.
