A little note
The Photo: Snow-in-summer (Cerastium tomentosum) in our neighbor’s yard.
The Thought: Our neighbor moved away, and though the house has been sold since last November, the new owners have yet to move in. Our neighbor’s daughter takes care of the place until the final move. Her garden was immaculate — everyday she weeded it; at night she sprayed delicate plants the deer love with something to keep the deer away.
We walk by the garden almost every day, and always pause to admire one of the flowers currently blooming in the masses of plants growing in layers and seasons over the weeks of spring, summer, and autumn.
This plant, snow-in-summer, has spread in among the other plants, which I know our friend had planned. The blossoms rise tall above the other still-to-bloom foliage as well as its own low growing woolly, silver leaves. So it really does look like a dusting of snow in spring, just before summer.
And so, a poem… the persistence of beauty amidst change and transition

Snow in Summer
In the rocks they bloom
in spring like snow on wooly
leaves; summer’s coming.
