Inspiration

I’m working through Stephanie Kiser Coleman’s Spring Seeds class. She’s working in gouache; I’m working in digital gouache in Procreate and watercolor. My gouache brushes are Realistic Gouache brush set by Liz Kohler Brown.

Progress

I’ve completed the Spring Seeds class — my favorites are the daffodils and tulips.

Daffodils

Tulips

Squirrel

I’ve not done the last series in watercolor or gouache. Here are the original three.

Learning

Almost every teacher emphasizes the importance of sketching several rough drawings before starting. I found this contour method very appealing because my eye is focused so much on the reference image and my hand, that I can get the feel for the motif I’m drawing. That helps build the right perspective and size in the muscle memory. It also inspires me to draw more in a sketchbook.

What’s your thinking?

So, these little experiences of sketching followed by painting without fear– just get the strokes down develops so many different skills: about drawing, about painting, about color, etc. Do you have a sketchbook habit?
