Wednesday WrapUp Hawthorn Pattern

Welcome

Today’s WrapUp: Hawthorn Tree Floral Pattern, Fads of the 60s, and my Vintage Metallic Spoonflower entry

Chinoiseries Hawthorn Pattern

Off and on this week I spent time on THE TRAILING FLORAL PATTERN CHALLENGE by Barbel Dressler. I retook  Barbel Dressler’s Trailing Pattern Class and combining it with the strategies of Bekki Flaherty.

It took a while to get the blossoms illustrated and the complex leaves with all their loops. I also needed to adjust the vines so the leaves flowed out the branch nicely. I also like texture because the flat pattern looks like it’s missing something. I added a texture to the pattern and to the background with repeating canvas textures from Jennifer Nichols of Creative Journey. Jennifer has provided two Procreate documents, each with several types of textured, repeating patterns.

My blog post, WrapUp Hawthorn last week provides more background information, initial sketch, and palette.

After I finish this post, I plan to upload the purple pattern to Red Bubble to order a dress in the purple pattern. I’m excited to see one of my favorite trees in our yard, our hawthorn tree, as the floral pattern for a dress.

Update: You can see my Red Bubble collection of products for the purple pattern here and the same pattern, but a larger version here.

FADS of the 60s

My family asks us to write a post a week for Storyworth to share a bit our history to pass on to family. I am behind and need to catch up.

One of the prompts was to share fads followed as we were growing up. I thought of two fads that I could illustrate.

First, I remember when I was 8-10 years old, we wore pedal pushers and halter tops. See the illustration on the left. I would probably have had a floral pattern or plain colors, but I decided to make a design of my own with delicate stripes.

Second, as a teenager in the late sixties, I saved my earnings as a checker at the local Red Owl store to purchase clothes at a new boutique on Main Street. One of the outfits was blue stars on a vest-like top and bell bottoms. Bell bottoms were a big deal in fashion in my teen years. I used a template from the Digital Fashion Illustration class by Cardwell and Ink on Skillshare to design my illustration of the outfit. I placed myself along the Missouri River where I grew up with a photo I had taken a few years ago.

Vintage Glamour Metallic Spoonflower Challenge

Spoonflower designs in black and white transform when printed on metallic materials, creating a bold and glamorous effect. The Vintage Glamour Metallic Wallpaper Challenge caught my attention. I knew I had art I hadn’t quite found a use for yet that would be perfect for this challenge. Read the post about it here: Bold Black.

The spiral pattern above is one I wanted to submit, but I had already used it for a “which way” pattern challenge. It’s in my Oddball collection.

But, I also had a vintage brush I was making, and it, too, would work well for a vintage metallic wallpaper illustration. I called it Lotus Petals and it’s in my Bold Black White Collection, which is where I’ll place my metallic designs.

Thank You

Thanks to my readers for stopping by or subscribing to my blog newsletter. And thanks to my teachers who I’ve mentioned above. Each one brings something to my skills and I find myself continually merging learnings from each as I illustrate. Do you find yourself doing so too?

We’re all on a learning journey and are in different places. If you’ve got a little hope to become an artist, just start. It’s the journey that matters. There are lots of people to support you!

You’re welcome to follow this blog for art inspiration. We can share with #warmup4art to enjoy our work together! I look forward to your sharing and find me at @42Sheri, on Mastodon Sheri42, on Flickr teach.eagle Sheri 42.
