Welcome
Welcome!
On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. This Wednesday Wrap Up shares a busy week for art — a portrait party, a start of a holiday collection, and watercolors.
Portrait Party
Charly Clements is once again sharing a “Fun with Faces” challenge she now calls “Portrait Party.” Draw portraits every day for a week, each day with three items to include. Tag with #portraitparty & #charlyclements and tag @charlyclements .
Watch Charly’s reel about July 29- August 4, 2024 challenge here, and check out the post here: Portrait Party August 2024. Go to Charly’s post and type in “portrait party” in the comments to receive the prompts and tracker.
I’ve completed the first three this week, plus some planning with sketches and thumbnails. I mostly use Charly’s brushes, but also some of my own, native Procreate brushes, and some from Lisa Bardot. Here’s the wrapup:
- Portrait Party Time — sketches and thumbnails
- Braids, Watermelon, Jewelry
- Teal, Disco, Afro
- Botanical, White hair, Animal
Evergreen Cozy
As I said previously, I am illustrating a few cozy holiday birds for my hero art for the collection I’m illustrating for the July CatCoq challenge [@CatCoq everywhere] . Yes, I’m catching up. I had reviewed Liz Kohler Brown tutorials in Affinity Designer and some videos and templates from Rebecca Flaherty [on Cara and YouTube ].
I’m using the same palette for the collection which I’m creating in Affinity Designer. I’m now easily using the pen tool. gradients, and clipping masks. I love the precise placement in each element an on the page that can be achieved in Affinity Designer.
I started with sketches and have now completed the four birds i need for the collection. Today I added a cozy green bird to my collection with red, blue, and gold birds:

Watercolor
Finally, I tried a bit of watercolor with Lisa Bardot’s Watercolor Wonder brushes . One thing I like about Lisa Bardot’s brushes is that they come with guides that include tutorials and info about how the brushes work– beautifully illustrated with step by step directions. I was able to follow the process to create one lavender and two apple illustrations in watercolor. As you can see, there’s different types of watercolor brushes, blenders, glazes, blotches, splatters, and detail brushes.

See you next Wednesday
So this week has been very busy, and I’ll be continuing the Portrait Party and work on the collection. But I’ll also be busy watching the classes at Peggy Dean’s Summer Retreat from Aug 1-6. See my friend and teacher, Jennifer Nichols of Leila and Po Studio for a link:
And you’re welcome to follow this blog for art inspiration. We can share with #warmup4art to enjoy our work together! I look forward to your sharing and find me at @42Sheri, on Mastodon Sheri42, on Flickr teach.eagle Sheri 42.
