Inspiration
Today I started Peggy Dean’s Summer Creative Retreat, a six day all day event of artists sharing their thing. Check it out because here is just some of what I learned:
Painterly Procreate
What a fantastic class by Gabrielle Brickey. We learned how to use light values to paint in “blobs” to create a painterly look, like an oil painting, which is Gabrielle’s first medium. She graciously provided a brush set, but we mostly just used her modified 6B from Procreate. She painted swans, but I chose a frog. I am so amazed. Her work is stunning.

Symmetry On and Off
Dawn Nicole shared her process of using symmetry for her sketches to create a balanced card and using symmetry in parts of the coloring process. An amazing and fun class with brushes included here too. I couldn’t quite keep up, but I like my result too, without everything filled in.

Lettering in Watercolor
Shelby Abrahamsen of foxsy.com demonstrated who she letters with watercolor, blending colors together. She taught pen strokes and color theory before getting us started. Instead of traditional watercolor, I used Lisa Bardot’s Watercolor Wonders brush set for Procreate. I read the guide that accompanies the set to choose the ones that would work best for lettering. I duplicated those and put them into their own brushset I named “Bardot WC Lettering” so I’d have them ready whenever I want to do watercolor lettering on the iPad. I know I can blend the colors even better next time with the brushes in Lisa’s set. And, I didn’t have any thing to clean up when I was finished.

Symmetrical Indian Motifs
Anindita Biswas of CALLISCRIPT shared her process for creating handmade lettering and motifs of her Indian heritage using colored pencils. I, of course, adapted this to the iPad using a pencil brush. And I created a card for my great-grandson’s birthday today. His sister had gold in her invitation in June, so I added gold glitter clipped to the outline and letter for him. I love when what I’m learning turns into something for someone else, especially family. What a delight to learn about her Indian heritage and learn how to create a symmetrical and balanced design. Her work is elegant.

Zentangle
Finally, I adapted another pen and paper class to the ipad: Zentangle, taught by an hilarious and yet detailed teacher, Jess of JashiiCorrin. She provided a pdf of zentangles for us to try. It took me a few minutes to set up my canvas in Procreate, so I didn’t finish all the beginning tangles, but I did accomplish some meditative practice with the more complex designs:
