Welcome!
On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. This Wednesday Wrap Up shares a busy week for art — a quick review and practice with watercolor and gouache.
Review
I was busy with more watercolor monochrome florals, an inking illustration, and new gouache brushes:
- Monochrome Peach and Purple
- Monochrome Collection
- Inking an abandoned cottage
- Gouache Autumn Florals
New Gouache Brushes from Jennifer Nichols
I wrote a post about Jennifer Nichols of Leila and Po Studio [affiliate link] and her amazing classes in her Creative Journey artist community. Her recent “Live Lesson” “Flowy Fall Color-Changing Gouache Pattern” is on YouTube; we learned about her new Procreate gouache brushes, ways to change their settings for using secondary colors, and how to make a quick scatter pattern. The canvas, brushes, and palette are available in the private Creative Journey community [affiliate link]. I’ve been playing with the brushes and pattern making for the last two days of my art time, which I wrote about here: Gouache Autumn Florals.
Today I played with four of the brushes, changing the color dynamics of three of them to blend colors with pressure:

Next I tried the brushes above with the creamy gouache burnt edges brush as well. I’m still learning how to use the brushes slowly to get the blended aspect. It’s not easy to see the blending without seeing the chosen colors. But I used the same colors as I did to make the test documents above. I’ve listed the learning video below, which shows the color changing possibilities of the freebie experimental brush.

After watching the tutorial instructions [YouTube video], I used the experimental freebie brush set to full secondary color under color dynamics for the leaves and flowers and the creamy gouache burnt edges brush for the stems to create this design which shows the varying colors much better:
