Inspiration

I love the wildflowers in our shrub-steppe area, and I’ve started illustrating them. I have several started and am creating a Coulee Country Collection on Spoonflower. My plan now is to create a display for an art show with the illustrations with QR codes to blog posts that discuss the wildflower.

Arrowleaf Balsamroot Collection

This sunflower is one of my favorites, and it only blooms during May and June.

The entire wildflower was used for various purposes by the local Native Americans. Peeling and eating the fresh stems was a favorite treat. The flower even has a bee that lives solely on the aster family of plants: the sunflower bee.

For this flower I decided to create in watercolor a trailing pattern, a scatter pattern, and a seed scatter pattern, and a petal scatter pattern. Today I added stripes and gingham.

The Arrowleaf Balsamroot Sunflower Collection is almost complete; I still need to finish the tea towel in scientific style.
