Wednesday WrapUp Gumweed Stripes

Welcome!

On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. Last week was filled with different styles, but this Wednesday Wrap Up shares only the new striped pattern for the CurlyCup Gumweed Collection.

Inspiration

I kept looking at this collection and wondering what else would fit as a blender or secondary pattern. I did have a light version of the scatter design, but what else would add interest and variety to the set?

Spoonflower Design Challenges

Wouldn’t you know it, Spoonflower’s next challenge is the Sophisticated Stripes Design Challenge. Stripes would work perfectly. One of the suggestions in the challenge is to “Make your entry as elaborate or simple as you’d like, but be sure to include an artful twist to add the element of surprise for a new take on a classic pattern.”

I looked at the photograph of curlycup gumweed from my summer walk. I saw the slim leaves along the long stems, which is why I created the alternate pattern of just leaves, but then I thought I could make my stripes the yellows and greens of the plant as leaves with dots for buds and a few butterflies. And so the top two images on this post were created as a stripe pattern to add to the collection in both the light and dark background, which I added to the the CurlyCup Gumweed Collection.

I created the design with the same palette and brushes as the original patterns; I created a a wikipaintia for it, adding in the Jennifer Nichols seamless repeat #7 canvas [affiliate link] I used for the background of the light pattern and a slightly transparent set of the main patterns of the collection behind the two striped additions to the collection. I plan to get some set of these for my home; perhaps sheets and pillows or may be tableware.

I have added the patterns to Spoonflower in the Curlycup Gumweed Collection and previously asked this question you might want to help me with: Do I add one of these as my entry in the Sophisticated Stripes Design Challenge? I decided to add the medium scale light version as my entry.
