Messy Desk and Some Inspiration
This week I watched the live draw of Liz Kohler Brown as she chose, planned, sketched, and colored in a “messy desk” for a botanist in a Dark Academia style. You can see part of her sketch as she’s drawing in one of her IG posts about the changing ecosystem for artists. It’s got great suggestions for artists struggling to choose platforms in these chaotic times.
It’s why I started this blog. I’ve been on WordPress for many years– over twenty, for sure. It’s got its ups and downs, but for the most part I can count on the platform to work and update, and so far, care about its users.
My Messy Desk
I started a sketch, but couldn’t quite get into the “dark” part, so I created a messy desk for myself as a digital artist.
I started with a sketch that included a notepad with ideas for what was on my desk — and what is usually somewhere around my desk. Tea usually, but here I added hot cocoa. Chocolate in small bites. A plant nearby. Hard drive for Procreate backup. Art books. Cleaning cloth. LOL. Always needed!
I ended up with a version, not dark, but scattered, and including my own iPhone with my own soft case from my Spring Tulip Collection on Red Bubble. The soft case is my favorite– my iPhone doesn’t slide off everywhere and it’s easy to take on and off. I love this design too; it’s so bold and colorful.

I created a palette with plant colors, a bit of red and orange to match the phone case, and my light colored desk. I used brushes by Liz and some of my own, plus one of Jennifer Nichols-* for the crocheted coaster beneath my cocoa. I took a screenshot as I was drawing to insert into the iPad in the piece. This was quite fun to create.

So, what would your desk look like?
