Vintage

When my brother passed away, I found this old, Vintage cigar box among his things. The La Fendrich Cigar Company ended its business in 1969.

The box held my dad’s yellow flashlight with his name engraved and the business of my Uncle Dee imprinted on it. My brother had added a note that said, “Uncle Dee’s Business,” so others who found the box would know. Bill had also added several polished agates— probably from our trip to Seattle for the 1962 World’s Fair

Of course, that box is one of the things I took home with me, in remembrance of both my brother and my dad.

But today, for my Uncle Dee, who recently passed away at age 98 years of age, I am glad for the little things he and Aunt Marj shared. In his community, everyone knew him– he gladly helped others with mowing lawns and shoveling snow and fixing things– he was quite the inventor!

He played harmonica with my boys, taught Scott how to play the saw as a musical instrument, and shared stories with us about the many things he and Marj lived through; Uncle Dee was a World War II veteran.

Marj taught me how to do hardanger needlework!

I miss them so much. I gathered a few of my pictures into an album to give a flavor of the love story of their lives, and the care they took to preserve so many memories.

I have more to say and remember, but for today, I’ll just be grateful that they were in my life.

About The Challenge

Flickr’s 21st Birthday Photo Challenge Today’s prompt: Vintage

Flickr turns twenty-one this year and I’ve been a member since 2009, for sixteen years. I love Flickr — sharing, albums, descriptions, groups, license choices. It’s a great way to connect and share with others– and stay in charge of your own work.

So, I’ve decided to join the birthday challenge, which follows these prompts. I’ll add a note about the photo in each description. See the Flickr 21 Birthday Challenge Group pool here.

I’ve added these photos to a new album, Challenge Photography, which will hold any photos I take for different challenges. When you click the tag for the challenge #flickr21challenge, you’ll see a list of your own submissions, recently tagged photos, and then all the photos with the tag.

Come along, join the fun!

    1. Yes– and somewhere in a box there’s the scrapbook my brother and I created on our Seattle Fair journey in 1962. Somewhere… It’s always fun to find those memories, especially when the person associated with it is no longer with us. Thank you.
