Bright yellow flower clusters over shiny, holly-like leaves brighten spring’s evergreen shrub, readying for a fruitful feast when the flowers grow into blue-black edible, but sour, berries that birds and other animals love.
This is one of my favorite Pacific Northwest Plant: the Oregon Grape because its green shines all year with the yellow flowers in spring, the blueish berries in summer, and the reddened leaves in fall. A beautiful plant that is essential to wildlife habitat. It grows all over our yard, so –yes– we have plenty of wildlife ambling through the yard.
