This lilac from outside my back door brings in the delicate grace and fragrance to our kitchen. I love lilacs, and in the novels I write, the lilacs bloom all year long, unlike real lilacs, which bloom for but two weeks in spring. And I enjoy every day of those two weeks, as my poem says.
Spokane Manito Park Lilacs
I lived for years in Spokane before moving to the Coulee. Manito Park is a favorite place to enjoy an afternoon in any season, but the early days of spring, with lilacs in bloom for the Lilac City is a favorite. At any time of the year, but especially in the summer, if you visit Spokane, be sure to visit this park, complete with a Japanese Garden.
Spokane also has its own variety of lilacs, the Syringa Vulgaris Lilac— which is a double lilac that fades from dark purple to light on the edges.

My favorite are these:

Just a note about the Biodiversity Heritage Library
For some reason as of January, 2026, the Smithsonian will no longer participate to help the BioDiversity Heritage Library archives. Please learn about this change and donate to preserve the many terabytes of historical archives of the diverse life on earth made accessible by the BHL.
Thank you.
