Welcome!
On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. This week I finished a month of photography and poetry for NaPoWriMo, started quick drawings of twenty dogs for #the100dayproject, and entered yet another Spoonflower Design Challenge. Let’s start with the design challenges.
Spoonflower Design Challenges

To find all the past design challenges, click here: Spoonflower Design Challenges.
There are usually over two thousand entries, my best one in this set so far is the Heritage Revival challenge. I knew that one would work well. Those bunnies derived from the 100 Day project.
My Pet Doodles challenge entry might also do well, but you never know. I’m excited for my colleagues’ entries– they are so cute. Our mentor, MaddaMom, created this collection of our entries to help us encourage one another. Madda guides us with ideas, ways to write better titles and descriptions, and encourages us through the process. I appreciate so much her guidance.

My Pet Doodle Entry: Pet Doodles in the Garden
Cute vibes; smiling bunnies; rabbits eat flowers, a playful kidult design of vibrant colors on purple; a feel-good, optimistic play in the garden
Spring flowers pop up with rabbits hopping to gather vibrant delights. Inspired by the small rabbits in the meadows near our home. Write hello@sheri42.org for colors and scale.

My Art Deco Bold Art Deco Sunburst Tulips Entry
I spent so much time looking through Art Deco books and creating an Art Deco Pinterest board. I started with just an arch with the tulips. Then I placed that into a shell/scallop design and added to it, but that became unbalanced. I re-read the Spoonflower entry requirements, and decided the flower needed sunshine. So I added a design shell of a sunburst as mentioned in the suggestions for the challenge. It took me about three versions until I found the one I liked. As I work, I put the designs on Teela Cunningham’s Pattern Playground to see how they look. I liked my most recent revision:

So I entered it into the challenge:
Bold Art Deco Sunburst Tulips
Home Decor with Roaring 20s shine in a vibrant yellow sunburst surrounding bold purple, symmetrical tulips in sleek lines that radiate extravagance
Sweeping curves on a shell design enhance the geometrical sunburst that warms the blooming tulips, an art deco arch that reflects the era of the 20s.

Give the Challenges a Try
Give the Spoonflower Design Challenges— just learning how to focus on the requirements and get the titles and descriptions to fit is important for sharing and selling your art. Follow MaddaMom, look through her blog posts for support ideas, and click the “Join Us” on her blog to be part of our band of design challenge artists.
The 100 Day Project
The 100 Day Project I participate in is from Lindsay Jean Thomson with a website, IG, and podcast. The hashtag is #the100dayproject.
The goal is to make a plan for drawing every day for 100 days– five to ten minutes. That seems doable, doesn’t it? I’ve completed:
and now Day 7 of 20 dogs. Here’s the five of just my dog!

NaPoWriMo
National Poetry Writing Month in April coincides with National Poetry Month. I hope you’ve had time to read or write and enjoy poetry. I wrote a short poem every day to accompany a photograph I’ve taken. You’ll need to click the images to enlarge them. No masterpieces here, just snippets of my thoughts. Hopefully, I’ll be around for next April too.

Thanks for stopping by!
It’s been a busy week for writing, drawing, and patterns! I hope the Spoonflower Challenges capture your attention and I see your work there! Remember to check out MaddaMom!
I’ve enjoyed the beginning of drawing 20 days of dogs and 20 days of cats. It’s so fun to capture my own little [LOL] dog’s personality. If you have any questions about my process, just ask! I’d be glad to help with what I know. Find time to make art every day!
You can find many helpful artists teachers on my Artist Resources page. Take a look at their IG and YouTube. Find one that fits your learning and art preferences and stick with them a while to develop your skills. Every day, another aha!
You’re welcome to follow this blog for art inspiration. We can share with #warmup4art to enjoy our work together! I look forward to your sharing and find me at @42Sheri, on Mastodon Sheri42, on Flickr teach.eagle Sheri 42.
