Artist and Class

I took a class this weekend by Jasmine Hnatkova. I’ve been following her for a while now and love the designs she creates. I’m thinking of designing a calendar of florals, so her class, Procreate Patterns: A Step by Step Guide to Creating Stunning Repeats, seemed like a perfect fit.

Jasmine’s tutorials are excellent. She breaks everything into steps and shows a process for the overall flow with duplicated documents and for each step, showing the use of symmetry and sharing the layers and several strategies for adding texture. She provides a small brush set that fits well with this textured style. Be sure to check out her website for freebie templates that include tutorials.

The Hero and Pattern

I thought I’d create it with twelve of the wildflowers of our area, starting with arrowleaf balsamroot. I broke the symmetry with one leaf and the dragonflies. I’m pretty pleased with the results.

The hero design at top is my favorite of my chosen color palettes, but I followed her technique with another palette at first to design this hero design:

You can see it fits a modified diamond template. I created the pattern for this one, and then decided to try other palettes because I just did not like the green and blue in this, although this is a suggested summer palette. It’s interesting how these colors will thrill some people, while I just don’t like it.

Here’s a progression of all the palettes I tried:

Which is your favorite color palette? Do you use symmetry for your patterns? Remember to check out Jasmine’s website for her tutorials and tips on her blog.
