Welcome!
On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. This week I continued with learning Affinity Designer to learn to practice the vector tools and continue reflective, mirroring templates. As you know I’m taking Delores Naskrents Affinity Designer MasterClass to learn more about the tools in Affinity Designer. Oh, and Cats.
Procreate CATS

My friend, Ali, shared her project of her @terryrunyan style of cat painting from the @thepigeonletters SCR workshop. I’ve always loved Terry’s style and I love drawing cats. So, I found Terry Runyan on Skillshare and took three of her classes. Another friends is making t-shirts of two of my illustrations. Of course, Terry is a traditional watercolor artist, and I painted mine in Procreate. For a list of my brushes [I found them all in Jennifer Nichol’s Creative Journey Community. [affiliate link]– the Jenn’s Potpourri set, which is one of her membership freebies] and a free Cat Palette, see my blog post: Painting Cats.
Reflective Patterns and Textures

The shell pattern above is growing on me. We learned in Delores’s class to make the shell pattern; I added in the waves and fish as I also designed my particular shell pattern. I thought it was a rather silly pattern, and it is— but I rather like the colors and the design is growing on me for a new beach towel. Our weather is almost a 100° F, so the beach is the place to be, and won’t this pattern look cute on the sand?
This week I made the above pattern and other reflective — mirrored — designs in my MasterClass with Delores Naskrent [link above]. I was inspired by Spoonflowers new Design Challenge New Animal Prints, but the pattern of cat stripes just did not work. When I deleted the stripes, I was left with a background texture that I fuddled around with— duplicated and reflecting, adding blend modes to different layers and also adding a striped pattern. It reminded me of the scales on a butterfly’s wings — in pinks and teals:

Imagine the butterfly, its wings still so you can peer closely into the scales, curved in pinks and teals, strengthened by translucent teal stripes, so delicate and shimmering, your eyes can barely focus. Mesmerizing. Luxurious. I even applied this design as texture to a revised butterfly reflective pattern:

I included a review of posts about textures in the post too. Read about my Butterfly Wings pattern on the blog post, Butterfly and Wings.
That post also includes a look at an old pattern— Garden Floral Delight, available on Red Bubble. It’s pattern I loved so much I ordered it in an a-line dress and shower curtains My husband loves the new look in the bathroom.

Thanks for stopping by!
Delores keeps us busy with her engaging Affinity Designer lessons. I thank her and appreciate her specific and helpful tips, strategies, and organizational planning. I’m glad to learn the versatility of vector tools, and the ability to create my own reflective patterns as well as textures for backgrounds and motif effects.
My break from patterns to cats with Terry Runyan just added so much joy to those days, especially when my friend asked to make a t-shirt with the designs. I can’t wait to see which one she chooses. I thank Terry for her inspiration.
