Champagne / Raspberry
The prompt for September 8 is Champagne. It’s part of Lisa Bardot’s Making Art Every Day, which you can find each month here: Making Art Every Day. So it’s a chance to warm up before you begin working on your bigger projects. That’s why I love these prompts.
For this, I’ve forgotten the tricks to drawing glass, but I gave it a try anyway, etching in white the shape of the glass, with highlights and a few sparkling bubbles from the champagne. I wanted to finish within a half an hour or so, so I found a Bardot brush set that had a lot of textures for background and for bubbles– her Midcentury Brush Set.
One trick I did use was to freehand trace the upper shape of the glass on the striped background and cut and pasted it. Then I was able to lower the transparency of that layer so it looks muted through the champagne glass. I’m going to need to retake a class on drawing glass, though, to get it right.
This month’s set of prompts is all about being curious with color, so I googled the hex code for champagne and combined that with my previous colors for butter. So this illustration, I created light, mid-tone, and dark versions of champagne and reddish-pink. I did apply a strategy of using dark purple as the shading color, using blend modes like multiply or color burn for the desired effect. That was a good choice, since the shadow on the bottom of the glass, because of the purple, seems to reflect the pinks of the raspberry.
