Welcome
On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. This week I’ll share my Spoonflower Farmers Market challenge, a scallop watercolor, and more from Peggy Dean’s Procreate Bootcamp.
Farmers Market Challenge

On Tuesday, the Famers Market Challenge from Spoonflower was due. I worked on this one for two weeks, meticulously illustrating each motif of items found at the Farmers Market: olive oil, white wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, red lettuce, golden and red apples, strawberries, blueberries, oranges, grapes, red pepper, mushrooms, chickpeas, carrots, onions, tomatoes, loaves of bread and hot cross buns. Yum!
I drew the sketch in a diamond formation and, to complete, I followed a general process for each motif, a base, color, texture, details, highlights, shadows. Here’s the lettuce motif with its layers:

I chose many different brushes and duplicated each one to put into a “Farmers Market Set” so I could find them easily as I worked throughout the last two weeks. I used classic and new Procreate brushes, as well as Lisa Bardot and Jennifer Nichols brush sets. Here’s the brushes I applied to obtain the coloring and texture and depth I wanted:

A Day at Farmers Market
At Farmers Market, find artisanal fresh bread & vinegars with garden fresh greens & fruit to create a wholesome, cheerful feast for dinner. Which will you choose? Hand drawn / colorful. Various sizes or background colors available.
I created and added gingham coordinates, some in vegetables and some in fruit to create a new Farmers Market Homestead Collection. on Spoonflower, some of which you can see in the tear sheet photo at the top of this post.
Farmers Market on Gingham
Textured Gingham with fresh farmers market vegetables [onions, carrots, tomatoes, mushrooms] for a delicious dinner soup — or with fresh farmers market ingredients for fruit salad — oranges, grapes, apples, strawberries — available in different colors, with texture or without.

Peggy Dean Bootcamp
I continue to be wildly active and creative in Peggy Dean’s Procreate Bootcamp. I completed each challenge so far this week– a bit of funky work:

Each prompt has three parts, from beginner to more advanced requirements. The first plumple was obviously using one main color and brush. The second one, cow, is a collage from my own photographs as well as the illustrated cow with cool colored rainbow. The second is a landscape using a pastel brush adding in different trees and a pigeon. I created my landscape with Jennifer Nichols pastels, including a pigeon. Can you find it?
Watercolor Scallop Pattern
Finally, I took Maja Faber’s new class, How to Make a Watercolor Scallop Pattern in Procreate. She provides brushes and shows how to create the pattern template. Then we created a folk art type scallop pattern as the project. I planned to do a few more but have not had the time –yet. It’s a quick and fun class with a pretty result:
