WrapUp Self-Portrait Another Boho and Cards

Welcome

On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. This week I’ll share Procreate work of a collection of me from BootCamp, two cards, and the final Beachy Boho design for Spoonflower. It’s been a slow week of art.

Peggy Dean Bootcamp and Class

I continued the Pigeon Letters Peggy Dean’s Procreate Bootcamp prompts, this time with lettering and a “collection of me.”

The lettering is hand lettering practice which we learned in Peggy’s lesson. I turned it into a birthday card for my grandson who loves fishing. I really find it amazing that these are hand lettered — with ease! I followed Peggy’s fun and easy way to draw lettering– Happy. Then I used her suggestions for using grids and slanted lines for “birthday” and “Dillon,” respectively. I love my fish too, and the simple “imperfect patterns” from Lisa Bardot’s brush set to add to the letters and backgrounds.

Another prompt was to create motifs to represent a “collection of me.” The prompts were:

  • What animal do you feel the most connected to?
  • What is your favorite thing that you always carry?
  • Which season is your favorite?
  • What makes you feel most alive?
  • What’s your go-to food item?
  • How would others describe you?
  • What is your favorite flower?
  • What do you like the most about your home?

Can you find everything except food?

    Here’s a few hints:

    • animal — obvious
    • carry — my son
    • season — first up
    • most alive — evidence of grandkids
    • other — a good gramma, kind
    • flower — purple
    • home — grandkid creations — still there, though they have all grown up!

    My collection:

    • animal: cat — I don’t mind being alone, but lots of hugging. I work quietly, curiously, and don’t give up.
    • carry: around my neck, a heart necklace carrying my son
    • season: spring, the daffodil
    • most alive and home: remembering the times when the grandkids would visit and fill the house with laughter and joy, frustrations and solutions, and lots of crafts and fun. You can see the evidence of grandkids with the window art that fills our backdoor slider. When we replaced windows, we had ordered a new slider, but then realized we’d lose all the grandkid art — so we cancelled the slider order so to this day, though they are all grown up, the window art of grandkids still fill us with joy.
    • flower: lilac is a favorite flower [“a” I have more than one; daffodil is another]
    • other: I’ve been told I am a good grandmother and am thoughtful and kind; I hope so. You can see the handprint on the slider from a mudpie hand. I would leave that print for days.

    Another Card

I made this card for my daughter, wishing her a good morning with a coneflower and sparkling sky.

Another Beachy Boho Spoonflower Challenge Design

I have not liked many of my five or six designs I’ve created for the Beachy Boho challenge with neutral colors. I wanted something with flowing seaweed and waves with fish or shells or starfish. I found a flower that grows on the beach – a sea trumpet. I decided to work with that, add in seaweed and waves of water and sand, with fish and shells. Here’s what I illustrated and entered:

Walk the beach through the sea trumpet florals. Watch the seaside waves rush and the fish jump while the seaweed dances in the waves. Pick up a shell or two. Denims and beiges. Click an image to view on Spoonflower.

The outline brush I used is from a new “Spring” set by Procreate [download it here]. The brush is called “expressive inker.” I love that it has one side very “edgy” and the other side less so. That way you can have an outline or a scruffy outline, more like nature’s natural edge.

    Thanks for stopping by!
