Weekly WrapUp Fun, Bootcamp, Challenge

Welcome

On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. This week I’ll share Procreate work: one for fun; two from BootCamp, and the final Modern Nautical design for Spoonflower.

For Fun

Next week is a great-granddaughter birthday and Easter is coming. So I decided to draw the bunny in the flowers. I know the bunnies are out; our dog searches for them on our walks! Luckily, he does not catch them.

I drew a simple sketch and then colored it in with soft watercolors. For watercoloring, I start with a base white background color on different layers for each motif, then clip layers to that and add the soft watercolor, texture, shading, highlights. I usually add the details with a liner on its own layer above the others, not usually clipped.

Bootcamp: Ink Sketch

For the Pigeon Letters Peggy Dean’s Procreate Bootcamp prompt this week, we inked a scene from a “slice of life.” I chose the sunflower on the hills where I walk the dog on Washington Flats. Every spring the hills come alive with arrowleaf balsamroot.

I then added color with gouache type brushes.

Spoonflower Modern Nautical

I spent quite a bit of time drawing, revising, revising, revising, and finally revising the design for this challenge. I liked my creatures, but the seaweed I changed many times. I definitely changed the “waves” until I finally found a version I liked. Then I had to move them around to fit with the design. And then I had to add a few fish in different places to for the “center” section of the pattern so the design did not look too repetitive. Here’s the medium and large designs, plus a gallery of Spoonflower products for the challenge “Modern Nautical Challenge.” I started a Spoonflower Collection called Sea Life; I need to add coordinating patterns for each of the designs.

Modern Nautical Coastal Sea Life

Stand on the dock on a sunny day to watch the flowing lines of ocean waves over sea life in marine greens and blues; a nautical marine ocean of nature-inspired motifs of fish, seaweed, waves, seashells, stingrays, anchor. Fresh, calm. Click an image to view on Spoonflower.

Thanks for stopping by!

Make some art to spread some joy! Try a Spoonflower Design Challenge. I try to complete a design for each one. If you do, share it on this document with other artist friends and we’ll vote for you too! It’s something my friends and I collaborate on. See what you come up with and share.

You can find many helpful artists teachers, including the ones mentions in this post, on my Artist Resources  page. Take a look at their IG and YouTube. Find one that fits your learning and art preferences and stick with them a while to develop your skills. If you have any questions, just ask!

You’re welcome to follow this blog for art inspiration. We can share with #warmup4art to enjoy our work together! I look forward to your sharing and find me at @42Sheri, on Mastodon Sheri42, on Flickr teach.eagle Sheri 42. And, I’m so thankful you’ve been joining me with art this year! Take care!
