Seasons of the Saskatoon [serviceberry]

In April,
the hillsides burst with white—
five petal blooms of the Saskatoon

In spring,
A mule deer might nuzzle up
to feast on its new green leaves.

In June,
A chipmunk or chickadee
might taste its purple-blue berries.

In autumn,
its vibrant red leaves cover
the hillside in hope

In winter,
its red stems remind us
the spring will come again

In nature,
each season soothes
in the colors of the Saskatoon.

Photography:

The picture with the poem was taken April 20, 2006 at Crescent Bay near Grand Coulee Dam. The gallery photos were taken by Steamboat Rock State Park on Banks Lake, Wa on April 6, 2026. All were taken while walking our dog, but not the same dog. Thank goodness for dogs.

Besides the seasonal beauty of this tree, it’s important to note that the “berries” are really “pomes,” like miniature apples.
