Inspiration

Thank you to Jennifer Nichols for her lesson to Welcome Spring with Gouache Florals for the continued inspiration for these greeting cards.

The Flowers

For today’s illustration, I turned to my Kindle book by Peggy Dean, Botanical Line Drawing in which she provides step by step directions for two hundred flowers, leaves, cacti, etc. It really helped the imagination of creating and organizing the flowers to augment the lesson by Jennifer.

I followed the idea of gouache flowers and stems with fanciful details added in, dots; lines; spots; flicks of paint. When the flowers and stems were finished, I had to move the left orange flower closer to the others because it looked off having it far to the left. Then I decided this would be a wonderful garden, so I added the black wrought iron fence behind the flowers to look like we, the viewers were inside the garden.

Next, I changed the colorway of the design with a different technique than I mentioned before in the post More Gouache Florals. My friend Ali in my Jennifer Nichols Creative Journey Community reminded us of this strategy.

I copied/pasted the floral components to flatten the layers into one layer. I added a clipping mask to that layer. The clipping mask layer, I changed to the blend mode “hue.” Then I dropped black to get a black/white over blue design. I repeated that on different clipping mask layers with pink and teal. Here are all four designs:

The Stores

I uploaded the colorful design to my Cardisle and Zazzle shops [Sheri42]. I queried ChatGPT for ten messages with the prompt: “Write ten messages for a “Thinking of You” greeting card illustrated with a colorful garden of fanciful flowers behind a wrought iron fence.” I adapted them for my card.
