Wednesday WarmUp More Funky Florals

For the past many weeks, this blog has hosted “Wednesday Warm Up,”— a day of usually quick drawing, inking, brushing as warm up to our serious art. I share a strategy to try each Wednesday using the iPad app ProCreate. I usually only use the brushes in the app— there are so many I haven’t tried that warming up with a new brush will be an added bonus and challenge.

Last week, I was about to present a bit more about Off-Kilter / Funky Illustrations as in a prior week. However, life got in the way; and this week I was able to finish the warm up project post, with these bright florals and berries. I really like how the blend modes work together in this one– so here’s how I created it.

This Week

Today’s Funky Florals discuss both the process and the adjustment of my dry ink brush for my needs. First, though, I’d like to thank three people who made my art better:

The Video Replay and Dry Ink Brush Adaptation

Luckily, the video replay preference was selected so I could create a slower version to show the process used. I also explain how I tweaked my dry ink brush so it “fills” better.

The Process

I really love this style, and find it not only relaxing, but quite a learning experience as well as I practice several skills:

  • Reference: to color drop on other layers
  • Layers: grouping, duplicating, merging [to maintain originals so changes can be made later for new colors]
  • Adjustment Tool: changing “hue, saturation, brightness”
  • Transform Tool: moving, distorting, warping
  • Blend Modes: interaction of layers and colors
  • Clipping Masks: to add texture/designs

  1. I love the style of this drawing! I don’t have access to Procreate, but I will see if I can adapt it to Affinity Designer. So much to learn! Thanks for sharing your techniques.

    1. Thank you, and you’re welcome. Oh yes, I’m sure Affinity Designer will be an excellent platform for this style– so easy to duplicate and move. I’ve a class or two on Skillshare I want to take from Tracey Capone for AD. I actually love that app– I just get stuck in the easy drawing in Procreate. Please share how you adapt this to AD– maybe start your own blog? I look forward to your illustrations! ~ Sheri

      1. Thanks Sheri. I haven’t yet, but hope to get to it during the coming month. I’ll report back here. Keep in mind that I’m still very much a newbie on Affinity. I used to use and love PhotoImpact before Corel put it down.

      2. Me too.— beginner in Affinity, and I love how nifty it is. I’ve seen Serif’s video on the new update— should really help with layering textures and then rendering quickly for its results. Looking forward to your response and art. ~ Sheri

    1. Hi Karen— The demo was my first iPhone demo recording. I’m glad it made sense and you liked it. Are you still in Africa? I just read the Time article the country you’ve been working in, and the times seem to be worsening there. Hope all is well. Take care.

      1. Hi Sheri … The demo really makes me want to get an iPad! I hope Apple is paying you some advertising money. 😉 Yes, I’m still in Burkina Faso. There are still troubles with terrorists, but they’re pretty much confined to the northeast of the country. The village where I live is in the middle of the country, just west of the capital. So far, all is well there. Thanks for your interest!
