Daily Create Childhood Scares

Lovely Anglican style brick Lutheran church on a treed street next to the tutor-style parsonage with the information from the blog post: “Daily Create Prompt: #DS106 #tdc4003 #clmooc #dailycreate Childhood Terrors: Sunday Sermons

Taking a cue and memory from @Ronald_2008, I remember when the sermon would start, the castle-like hanging lanterns would slowly dim, covering the light and leaving us in near dark. Creepy.

And the new church added on looks like a fortress rather than a shelter or place to celebrate one’s God.

And the lovely parsonage is gone.”

I wondered which one of the choices would fit my own memories of fears. Then I saw Ronald’s response:

I could also remember Sundays, not that we went to church service that often, but I did attend “confirmation” in ninth grade and Sunday School through the early school years, all at Trinity Lutheran Church. I found a public domain postcard of our church for my response.

But those sermons– I did not like them. I did not listen. I did not listen because I was distracted by the doom and gloom of the imposed lighting as the sermon began.

This is a beautiful church, but taking a cue and memory from @Ronald_2008, I remember when the sermon would start, the castle-like hanging lanterns would slowly dim, covering the light and leaving us in near dark. Creepy.

I searched for the old church I knew to still be there, along with the new one. I could not find images of the lanterns, but I found similar lanterns in the First Lutheran Church on 7th Street. I snapped a screen shot from their website and from Google Maps of Trinity Lutheran Church at 502 N 4th St, Bismarck.

And the new church added on looks like a fortress rather than a shelter or place to celebrate one’s God. And the lovely parsonage is gone.

It’s quite sad that instead of inspiring the joy and love of Jesus, I was instead left with dread. I wonder how many other children felt that way.

Anyway, I have lovely memories of Sunday School, and the “confirmation” was fun because — of friends!

And so my response was:

So I guess it’s not a surprise that so many churches have deepened their focus on fear, away from the love of Jesus, and so followed the conservative politics and the misfit of that guy. So sad.
