Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. It’s almost summer and the bugs are out and about doing their thing. I found this photo of a Gray Hairstreak (Strymon melinus) butterfly eating the mint in our yard. They aren’t as particular in their habitat or choice of munchies as most butterflies. They obviously like mint and clover in our yard. They can be found all over North and Central America. Have you seen them? Learn more at iNaturalist.

I find them fascinating because, in this photo I took, the two orange dots look like eyes and make the butterfly look bigger by making its back end look like the top end. See its antennae and its legs? The two orange eyes completely change its perspective for the unknowing enemy. And so, a poem….

Poetry

Two Orange Eyes?

“What is it-
The creature with two orange eyes?”
I fool them:
My ‘orange eyes’ on my down side
looking like a huge up side
scares others away
so I can munch
my mint lunch.
