Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. This photo is from almost a mile downstream from Grand Coulee Dam. The power, irrigation, and flood control make this a powerhouse of man’s ingenuity. But, there is a loss — from Chief Joseph Dam and this one, the natural migration of salmon was stopped. Because of that, Grand Coulee Dam funds three fish hatchers and has place two million salmon into the river system below the dams.

A Loss

A fortress of power
almost a mile across
straddles the Columbia
but the salmon, we’ve lost.
