Blurred World

reflections in Crescent Bay Lake in December

Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. There’s a subtle beauty in the blues of winter, when the wind softens and water on the lake is still, moving only with the movement of water fowl, whose gentle ripples blur the reflection of earth and sky on the mirror-like surface of the lake.

Here, in our quiet world, with little hustle and bustle, we find calm and peace, and think the world is OK. But, it’s not OK. The migration of people driven from homes because of climate change continues. Our world and our vision is blurred from the realities that we can help with by supporting the change from fossil to green energy.

For an example, just today the AP News reported on the effects of sea level rise on a small community in Mexico, devastated by flooding caused by climate change and sea level rise. The AP image from Google Earth of the changes to the area over a twenty year period shows what’s in store for many communities on earth:

Over the past 140 years, satellites and tide gauges together show that global sea level has risen 21 to 24 centimeters (8 to 9 inches). That’s like covering the contiguous U.S. in about 16 feet (about 5 meters) of water. Recent rates have been unprecedented over the past 2,500-plus years.

It’s mind-blurring; we don’t want to face it. Just let me view my peaceful corner of the world. But no: Speak up. Speak out. Speak for and with those who need help. What do we do? We get informed. That’s the first step.
