Wednesday WrapUp Thanks Ali and Bekki

periwinkle trailing diamond pattern

Welcome!

On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate. This Wednesday Wrap Up shares an art process for repeat pattern design learned from Rebecca Flaherty as referred to by my friend, Ali Sale. I’ll share links so you can learn from them too. I am so thankful for their sharing of what works well for them so we can all learn.

Inspiration

Ali’s instagram is full of beautiful trailing floral patterns, each one different and unique in numerous color versions. Here’s one that inspired me: Ali Sale / Floral Patterns

As you can see, she’s provided her inspiration, @bekkiflaherty Rebecca Flaherty is a surface pattern designer and illustrator from the United Kingdom who enjoys sharing what she knows so everyone can be creative. She provides weekly prompts for florals from around the world, 52 Weeks of Florals and has a YouTube channel and Etsy shop as well as teaching on Skillshare. So there are many ways to connect and learn from her.

My Adventure with Bekki

With such praise of Bekki’s template’s from Ali, I found this post from Bekki on IG:

I joined her Freebie section on her website for the pattern templates, purchased the canvas on Etsy, and followed the tutorial on YOUTube. I watched a few times and took notes– she’s easy to listen to with clearly explained and demonstrated strategies. You can find all the links to learn on that YouTube video tutorial.

Then I began my journey for learning the diamond pattern design. Although there are a lot of steps, by the time a few are created, the process becomes intuitive. Here’s the results of my illustration:

I started with the purple periwinkle from my garden, creating two more color versions. Then I tried the tulip-like florals with different colored backgrounds. I’m very pleased with the results, and will keep practicing! The hardest part is getting the initial stem to blend when repeated, but the tutorial explains a process to get it right every time.

Try It

So try it out– Follow @bekkiflaherty check out her website: Rebecca Flaherty . Join the Freebie section on her website for the pattern templates, and follow the tutorial on YOUTube. You can create your own canvas overlay and layer groupings based on the tutorial. I just found it easier to purchase her canvas on Etsy.

And you’re welcome to follow this blog for art inspiration. We can share with #warmup4art to enjoy our work together! I look forward to your sharing and find me at @42Sheri, on Mastodon Sheri42, on Flickr teach.eagle Sheri 42.

And thanks again to Ali Sale and bekkiflaherty for their inspiration.

    1. Thank you, Rebecca! And I appreciate the templates and canvas with such wonderful and easy-to-follow YouTube tutorials. The wonderful part about is the possibilities to add one’s own florals and leaves, like I did here. It’s magic, for sure! Thank you.
