Hibiscus syriacus
Mule deer roam our town. They are a problem: they eat everything. I have a few flowering plants on my front porch which I cover with a sheet at night so the deer don’t eat them while I sleep. They sometimes munch during the day, but have discovered a patch of clover in the yard and the crab apples along the boulevard, so they’ve been staying off the porch. Sometimes I block the steps with a bench.
Anyway, I took this photo on Friday, August 7th— finally another flower, hibiscus. I did not know they only bloom for a day. Hopefully now that I usually remember to cover them at night, I will get the prolific budding the plant is known for.
So I am delighted to have one flower. Notice the two leaves behind the flower— at top and at right. They are torn from the nibbles of the deer.
