#Blaugust2026 The Great Mullein

This wildflower weed, Great Mullein, spreads all over disturbed areas in our dry area. Its second year growth grows very tall, like a spear. The flowers bloom out on the spike a few at a time all summer long, opening for part of the day. The next year they spikes are brown, and my husband would pull those up and throw them like spears when he was a kid.

The first year growth is a rosette of large fury leaves. Some people grow these as decorative plants in their yards.

They are not very stable, in that they are easily disturbed, so they are only a minor nuisance on grazing lands. They are considered a weed; they are not native, arriving from Eurasia.

See the Burke Herbarium entry for more photos.

I once found one in which the spike was a heart:

common mullein in it’s second year; the the seeds have fallen, the blooms have died and so will the plant.

What is Blaugust?
