Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. There are many women in our lives, some not mothers, who have influenced us in our endeavors to better the world.

My Aunt Vi had no children, but she loved me like her own, and laughed and cried along with me. She was my mom’s older sister and the child who watched over the other kids during the times of the Great Depression.

My aunt attended every important event of my life and we visited her often every summer. I looked forward to the times playing with my little brother in the yard, which included a pile of dirt and Tonka trucks to build roads and dams. She laughed at all our shenanigans, despite the scoldings from my mother who wanted us to always “be good.”

She worked as a secretary with the selective service. My Uncle Ray and my Aunt Viola spoiled my brothers and I with little and fun things— and every summer, with a family reunion at a cabin on Lake Metigoshe where fishing and swimming and card games and cousins and choke cherries were the highlight.

Well, I did not get up to join the pontoon of fishermen at the early hour of 4:00 am. But when I did get up, I took my bamboo fishing pole to the end of the dock and pulled in perch after perch, which became our breakfast since the retuning fishermen had caught nothing! I can still see the smile and hear the laughter of my Aunt Vi at that!

So, on Mother’s Day, remember not only those who are mothers, but also those who were like mothers in your life. Heather Cox Richardson wrote a wonderful piece about just that today. Take a look: May 14th, 2023, Letters from an American.

As my husband noted in our family chat in his Mothers Day greeting, “You all hold the world together.” And as one of our young mothers, my granddaughter, in her worship, explained how she lives a life “forgiving everyone for everything.”

And so, a poem….
