Chintz Revival Entry

Chintz Revival Revision

As explained in the Chintz Revival Project post, the pattern on the left above is the original design I created and is still my favorite. However, the Chintz Revival design challenge suggests “Please show us your finest reimagined chintz, featuring abundant blooms, graceful movement, and layered detail.” So my entry, at right, is a revision of the original design.

In the previous post I talked about several ways I could revise the design. Here’s what you can see as you examine the two designs.

  • removed the bud and replaced it with another blossom
  • added in small red leaves with texture and shading for depth and layered detail
  • added in blue berries in clusters with shading and texture
  • drew in pink/green large leaves to accompany the red leaves and blueberry details
  • added in dotted line flourishes for added detail and movement
  • removed the striped texture so just the stripes form the background

I know I said the plain, original version is my favorite of the chintz, but this one is really growing on me now that I see it on products. I haven’t decided which to order yet — usually I order placemats or table runner and napkins, but a table cloth would be pretty– or another set of sheets. Take a look:

Chintz Revival Blooms & Berries Large

Chintz blooms and berries intertwine in a rich, decorative garden of graceful, abundant blooms flowing beautifully above subtle stripes across a wall or drapery.

I am pleased with the flow of the pattern, especially shown on the wallpaper. I will be uploading different scales of the design so quilters and crafters have smaller versions for their projects. I will also upload all the coordinates and blenders, like, gingham, stripes, striped florals, and others. I have ideas for a few more, such as a small repeat of the red leaves.

Bloopers

Just listing the additions makes it sound so easy, but those red/green large leaves were tricky to draw, especially the curved one. When I start drawing the details, I zoom in to get them cleanly drawn. But when I start that way, I make the details too small. LOL. And I added in way too many dotted line swirls:

When I zoomed out, the blue berries and their leaves just looked so silly– barely there.

So a tip to remember is to zoom out to start in order to get the right scale, then zoom in to draw them in smoothly. I kept that version to remind myself! LOL.

Check back for another post later next week when I finish the coordinates for this Chintz Revival Collection. If you have any questions, just ask.
