Weekly WrapUp June 3

Welcome

On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. This week I added to the Chintz Revival collection for Spoonflower design challenges, created an anniversary card, competed a Daily Create with poetry, and started an abstract for a poem I’m trying to write.

Chintz Revival

Although I’ve yet to upload these designs, I have finished the collection:

Chintz Revival Collection by Sheri42

A collection for projects like these includes a main or hero design, a secondary design, and blenders or coordinates. This allows the decorator to choose a coordinated set of designs for a room: a centerpiece, then wallpaper and pillows that reflect what’s within the main pattern.

In this collection, the main design is the detailed chintz repeat pattern at top left. The secondary pattern is at lower right, using the flowers, leaves, and stripes from the hero pattern. Another secondary pattern is at top right– the flowing simple floral vines within stripes.

Coordinates take smaller elements of the hero design and matching colors to act as blenders to the overall look of the room design. The easy blenders are the stripes, in two of the main colors, pink and green. Gingham is another design that people love; add a bit of the hero design and there’s another blender. Lastly, I focused on the small red leaves, creating a tossed repeat design above pink stripes. If you read my process pieces for this pattern, you’ll remember that I revised the original design in several ways, including eliminating the floral buds. In the red leaf design, I added the buds back in for variety and detail.

The process of revision from the two posts from the week before:

I’m planning to upload the rest of the collection tomorrow. I’m very pleased with each piece.

Anniversary Card

I have written about the willow goldfinch I painted before, but I wanted to apply Lisa Glanz’s Blot and Blooms brushes with the same bird. I turned it into an anniversary card. I like the ability to easily create shadows with the subtly of a brush stroke– take a look at the bird’s shoulder/wings.

Daily Create: When Sunshine Finds You

My friend nudged me to complete a Daily Create since an old calligraphy work of mine was part of that prompt. I wrote the poem and added art and photography to enhance it. I wrote about here: Daily Create #tdc 5244. The piece:

Abstract / Collage

In Lisa Bardot’s Art Makers Club, I watched a lesson on Digital Collage in Procreate. My goal was to create an abstract / mixed media design that represents an idea I have for a poem. The poem will be about not turning away, not tuning out, but doing something to protect those under attack illegally and unconstitutionally. In our lives we have laundry, sports, gardening, dance, groceries. We’re busy. I know how easy it is to ignore that people who are following the immigration process are being scooped up and imprisoned in unsafe accommodations; they are not criminals and are not being treated humanely or with due process.

A letter a day is all it takes to do something.

A phone call a day is all it takes to do something.

A walk in protest for an hour is all it takes to do something.

As Timothy Snyder, historian of authoritarian regimes reminds us to “keep doing the thing.” Whatever it is, as long as many people protest, the regime will fail.

So my poem will be about doing our busy lives, not turning away, and doing “the thing.” A small thing helps.

I’m still letting the ideas flow in my head for the poem, but here’s the abstract I created today.

Thanks for stopping by!

Designing collections is so enjoyable — creating a whole ensemble for the home is quite an accomplishment. Designing for challenges adds a bit of difficulty to meet the standards. This wrap-up explained how I created blenders for my main design.

You can find many helpful artists teachers on my Artist Resources  page. Take a look at their IG and YouTube. Find one that fits your learning and art preferences and stick with them a while to develop your skills. If you have any questions, just ask!

You’re welcome to follow this blog for art inspiration. We can share with #warmup4art to enjoy our work together! I look forward to your sharing and find me at @42Sheri, on Mastodon Sheri42, on Flickr teach.eagle Sheri 42. And, I’m so thankful you’ve been joining me with art this year! Take care!
