On most Wednesdays, check this blog for a strategy, process, or reflection for illustration with the iPad app ProCreate or Affinity Designer. This week I share a birthday card for a friend and my Hydrangea Hope collection on Spoonflower for the Hydrangea Challenge.
Hydrangea Hope
I designed this hero illustration thinking of my daughter, Heather, who takes a pile of cut flowers and arranges them into the most beautiful bouquets, often for her family and friends, which I wrote about here.
My idea was to create bunches of blue hydrangea and its leaves, somewhat symmetrical with a very textured bold, blue-hued striped background. As I was adding in the textures on the stripes — there are three layers of different opacities and blend modes, I noticed the next Spoonflower Challenge, Elevated Classics for stripes, plaids, etc. So just the stripes are also entered into that challenge. The two tea towels joined the collection:
The hydrangea pattern itself is mostly symmetrical with a few extra leaves added in to balance the pattern and the colors. I drew and inked in the Procreate app. Currently there are two sizes: large and medium. I also created large and medium versions of the striped pattern. See them all in the Hydrangea Hope Collection. Below is the tear sheet for the collection.
I also plan to create another hydrangea pattern with stems and leaves, flowing in a trailing pattern, with the bold stripes behind again. I enjoyed drawing the hydrangea blossoms– lots of different angles and brightnesses. It was very calming. I can use the same motifs in the new pattern. The process for designing a new pattern with the same motifs is to duplicate the palette, delete what I don’t need and redesign and reorient the motifs I will use. I’ve a busy weekend coming up so we’ll see if I get it done.

The hydrangea collection took all week; I only had time to illustrate another birthday card, reusing a previous motif. I changed the background color and font.
