I’ve enjoyed sharing Wednesday Wrap Up— a wrap up of my project tips for the past week or something I’ve learned that may also help others with the same #warmup4art hashtag. Today I share a the results of three classes I took on Skillshare, starting with this one by Cardwell and Ink Design: Procreate for Beginners: Botanical Contour line drawing, which is like my own Quick Splash Messages, Funky Florals, and Line Art / Off Kilter art styles.
The Surprise
As I progressed through three classes, applying the techniques and refining what I already do, I learned that playing around with styles can bring pleasant and profitable surprises. Let me walk you through to my surprise.
Botanical Contour and Linocut Projects
This monstera leaf stems from the contour class, and I added my own version of background behind it, as well as a “white” outline layer above the two created for the class, giving a more 3D effect.
I completed a few more, and my favorite is this one:
The peony is based on my photo of the peony in my garden:
Next I took Cardwell and Ink’s Skillshare class Linocut print designs in Procreate for Illustration and Surface Pattern design which provided the ideas to create floral designs, including this tulip. I loved all them so much I placed them in my Red Bubble shop.
Tulip Surprise
I loved the tulips and decided to recreate it in the contour style with color, so I returned to my practice with contour abstract style. I followed the basic lessons with brushes from Cardwell and Ink and then embellished the background and a frame with abstract/texture brushes from Jennifer Nichols at Leila and Po from her Skillshare class Abstract Painting in Procreate: Playing with Paint, Texture, and Mark-Making!
I also applied different colors and gradients to these contour style tulips.
I was not considering this as one for my shop, but as I looked at the transparent version on Instagram, I discovered that I loved the black and the white backgrounds, so I uploaded a transparent version to RedBubble for both black and white background products:

All because I tried something new— with the help of two artist teachers [Cardwell and Ink and Jennifer Nichols Leila and Po]— and I removed the background from my “playing around” to see the abstractness more clearly:

So, that wraps up this Wednesday Wrap Up. As we develop our skills every day we choose to make art every day, and stretch ourselves with strategies that match the style and effect of our goals. And sometimes our “playing around” with the help of other artist teachers, we find a piece we love and can share with others. So keep going in two ways: make art every day and learn and share with others.

This is a really nice technique, Sheri! Thanks for sharing … I think I’ll try this. It’s been awhile since I’ve done any graphics.

Hi Karen– Did you start any sketches or art? I love this process of digital contour– it’s so relaxing! I can just pull out my iPad and start and finish pretty quickly for some of these, and it just feels good to create something nice in the world. 🙂 Take care!
